What is Your Healthy Weight?

I was thinking about this the other day, what is our healthy weight? Yes, there are charts that can give you an idea of where you should be. But, in college, I learned that these charts are not totally accurate, because of muscle mass. So, how do we figure out what we should weigh? Then, other health professionals say we shouldn’t focus on what the scales say. Now, how are we supposed to know if we are healthy human beings?

BMI is short for Body Mass Index. Basically, you look at this chart and it determines if your health status. In general, looking at your BMI can give you an idea if your weight is healthy. It’s not for everybody. It doesn’t take into account if your weight is due to fat or muscle. There can be someone who would be considered overweight on the chat, but it’s all muscle. If you’re not a bodybuilder then you can trust the chart. Also, skinny bitches can be unhealthy. People you are naturally thin, but don’t engage in healthy behaviors will appear on the chart to be healthy. In reality, they might have visceral fat around their organs.

Hips Don’t Lie

Don’t fret, there is another way to see if your weight is healthy. Measuring your waist can be a good tool to see if you’re at a healthy weight. All you need is a measuring tape. Men and women will have different indicators. For example, men should not be over 40 inches. While, women should be under 35 inches. Higher waist circumference is associated with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other illness. This is a screening tool, it can give you an idea if your weight is an issue with your health. Don’t make any assumptions that because your number is high you’re a diabetic. Always follow-up with your primary care doctor.


Maintain Not Gain

The key to a healthy weight is to maintain and not gain. On average, we gain 1-2 pounds a year. There have been studies that show weight gain from 11-22 pounds after the age of 20 has major health risks. There are four main reasons we gain weight is diet, physical inactivity, sleep, and genes. We all experience times in our lives when we are not eating healthy or getting enough sleep. We fall off of the wellness path, but we can always get back on track. If you notice you’re gaining weight, try to nip it in the butt as soon as possible. I have noticed this with my parents, they have gradually gained weight over the years. It was a few pounds here and there and now they are in their sixties and have health concerns. If they would have tried to maintain their weight more, they might be off of their blood pressure medicine.

What Numbers Really Matter

Scales don’t define your overall health. Think of your weight as a trailer for a movie. It gives you an idea of what is going on in your body, but not the full picture. That is why it is so important to get a yearly physical from your primary care doctor. A physical almost always has blood work done. These are the numbers that really matter to your health. Your cholesterol and blood sugar levels can paint the picture of your health. You don’t have to weigh yourself every day to see if you’re healthy. But, you do need to get see your blood panel to see your overall health.

I firmly believe everyone has their own healthy weight. There is a difference between healthy weight and our ideal weight. You know the number we think we should be if we were Victoria Secret models. I think we should be focusing more on other numbers like cholesterol than pounds. Stop weighing yourself and go see a doctor and see if there is anything to be concerned about. Scales can be a good start, but not the end all be all.
